The Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT) was established on January 9, 1987.

CAT is governed by a Board of Directors which includes the nine Chatham County Commissioners, three citizen appointees and a citizen appointee representing the disabled community.

Funding for CAT comes from the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Federal Transit Administration, a local transit tax, and farebox revenues.

The free CAT Shuttle serves Savannah's downtown and Historic District and connects to other CAT bus routes and the Savannah Belles Ferry service.

The Savannah Belles Ferry service provides daily service between Hutchinson Island and River Street.

Weekly CAT cards, cash advance tickets, tokens and transit information are available at CAT Central, 124 Bull Street, and at CAT offices, 900 E. Gwinnett Street.
