Chairman Liakakis was elected to the Chatham County Commission in 2004.
Pete Liakakis, a native Savannahian, is graduate of Savannah High School and attended the University of Utah. Pete served his country in the United States Air Force and is a former member of the National Guard.
A successful business owner and leader, Pete is the owner of United Detective Agency, United Pictures, United Wholesale, and United Security. He is the president of United Television and Desperado TV, producing 16 movies for ABC, NBC and CBS Televison. He was Burt Reynold's personal bodyguard from 1971 to 1981.
Very active in the political arena assisting politicians in their campaigns, Pete was elected to the office of Alderman at Large in November 1995 and was re-elected in 1999. He served on the Savannah City Council for eight years. Pete also served as president of the Chatham Municipal Association for three consecutive years.
Pete has always had genuine concerns for the citizens of Chatham County. He worked on projects for the homeless, secured many fans, which started programs for Senior Citizens (Victims of Heat Waves). In 1960, he founded Savannah Responds to assist people that were devastated by home fires, flood, earthquake, hurricanes and many other disasters. He was responsible for securing the Jaws of Life in 1972, an act that has saved many lives. He is also responsible for many railroad crossing gates in Chatham County and was awarded the Sertoma Club "Service to Mankind Award."
He is a past member of the Executive Committee of the American Cancer Society, Savannah Tech Foundation, Past President and active member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, and sat on the Board of Directors of the St. Paul's CME Church Boys School. Pete has also served on the Board of Directors of the King Tisdell Cottage Foundation and is on the E.O.A. Advisory Committee. He serves in various capacities for Hope House, Citizens for Environmental Justice, Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, Chatham Municipal Association, Senior Citizens Board, Humane Society, Soccer in the Streets and numerous other civic and charitable organizations.
Pete is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the Chatham County Commissioners and Chatham Area Transit.
