What used to be the railroad that carried people from Tybee Island to Savannah in the late 1800s is now the first conversion project of rails to trails in the State of Georgia. The six-mile trail is situated on the old abandoned Savannah/Tybee Railroad bed. The construction of McQueens Island Trail was made possible by grants from I.S.T.E.A., the Department of Natural Resources, and thousands of dollars in labor and equipment donated by volunteers.

The trail has a crushed rock foundation, 30 wooden picnic tables, 18 fitness stations, trash receptacles, 10 wooden foot bridges, and directory signs. Walkers and joggers who visit the trail can view nature at its best. Numerous species inhabit the trail such as the eastern box turtle, the diamond back terrapin, the American alligator, and occasionally, a bobcat. Birds nesting in the area are too numerous to mention, but include the osprey, the red-tailed hawk, the brown pelican, the great blue heron and the willet. The trails renovation was designed to preserve the pristine qualities of the existing natural environment. McQueens Island Trail is located on U.S. Highway 80 East.
