Wellhead Protection Standards

1. Wellhead Protection zones have been created to protect public water supply wells from contamination.
2. Control zone is an area within a circle, the center of which is the center of a drinking water supply wellhead of a public water system and the radius of which is 15 feet. This area is to be protected by a chain-link fence or equivalent having a minimum height of seven (7) feet. Access shall be only through a locked gate. Only those chemicals used for water treatment shall be stored in this zone. Chemicals or motorized vehicles may be used in the control zone for maintenance of the well, well house, well pump, or associated plumbing.    
3. Management zone is the area within a circle, the center of which is the center of a drinking-water supply wellhead of a public water system and the radius of which is one hundred (100) feet.
4. The following uses or conditions shall be prohibited within public water system protection zones:
a. Any hazardous materials
b. Septic tanks or drain fields
c. Impervious surfaces other than roofs of buildings, streets, driveways and walkways serving allowed
d. Hazardous waste disposal sites
e. Storm water filtration basins
f. Underground storage tanks
g. Sanitary sewer lines
h. Specific wood preserving operations
i. Battery recycling and reprocessing
j. Retail gas stations and truck stops
k. Agricultural chemicals
l. Processing, reprocessing, and storage and disposal of PCB containing oils
m. Asphaltic-based and petroleum-based coating and preserving materials
n. Furniture stripping or refinishing
o. Exterior vehicle cleaning operation and vehicle salvage, drum recycling
If any of these conditions or uses previously exist prior to the adoption of this ordinance, please contact the Wellhead Protection Inspector in the Inspections Department to discuss preexisting, non-conforming uses.
